What is a Social Welfare Office?
A Social Welfare Office is a public institution responsible for providing assistance to individuals and their families.
The assistance offered by a Social Welfare Office may include:
- advice,
- information and guidance;
- social support;
- assistance with administrative procedures;
- material and financial aid.
The assistance provided by the Social Welfare Office is free of charge.
All people living in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg may contact the Social Welfare Office responsible for their municipality of residence. Anyone wishing to benefit from this assistance must make an appointment with the Social Welfare Office of the municipality in which they reside. They will then receive the support of a social worker.
The mission of a Social Welfare Office
The mission of the Social Welfare Office is to provide individualized social assistance in order to help people develop or maintain their social and financial independence.
In order to accomplish this, the social worker analyses the person’s situation in detail together with them, provides advice and information, and may accompany the person with certain procedures to help them access the social assistance and financial benefits they are entitled to. If necessary, the social worker may also refer individuals to specialized services and support them until their situation has stabilized.
Material and/or financial social assistance is subsidiary to other existing forms of assistance, meaning it is only provided after all other available forms of assistance have been exhausted.
